How can you live a more sustainable life?  This is the question we are all thinking about but really need to do something about.  It is quite easy to make a major difference by changing simple everyday activities and making informed choices.  Pete Seeger explains it well in this quote.

Why we need to live more sustainably.

When people are educated to know exactly what sustainability is they are naturally interested because this is about the survival and well being of human beings.  Sustainable living means that we have enough basic resources to look after our health and well being.  It means looking after not just our own interests but that of the world  – that it does not suffer because of our actions.

Why we must be Sustainable

It is our duty to leave a habitable world for our future descendants, to protect the Eco System and the Earth’s diversity.  If we do not embrace living a more sustainable life we are then the problem.  We will have no fuels and forests, animals will die out, global warming will get worse, the earths atmosphere will be damaged.   Living a sustainable life means treating the world with respect and not taking it all for granted.

Vegan Pantry Staples

Soy products that include tofu, tempeh and edamame beans are a very rich source of protein.  Soy also has good levels of calcium and iron making them a viable healthy option as a diary substitute.  When buying soy products always look for fair trade to ensure sustainability.

Chickpeas  are a versatile food that can be added to stews, curries or eaten cold in salads.  Try hummus on your toast for a protein boost in the morning.

Lentils are a great versatile food also that can also be added to stews, curries and salads.  Both red and green have lots of protein, fibre and other important key nutrients such as iron and potassium.

Quinoa is a complete protein containing all the amino acids,  cooked it contains 8g of protein per cup.  Quinoa can be a main ingredient in your dish or a side.  Add nuts, seeds and chopped up peppers,  a dash of lemon will add a little zing and some vitamin C.

Seeds are a great source of protein and can be added to almost every dish from dinners to desserts and smoothies. Chia seeds pack a mighty punch for such a tiny seed – a complete source of protein coming in at 2g per tablespoon, they are packed with fibre and rich in omega 3 fatty acids.  Hemp Seeds are another force to be reckoned with approx 5g of protein per tablespoon, they too are a complete source of protein.  It is a good idea to take a container and add some mixed seeds and nuts for a quick go to for sprinkling, store the rest until you need them.

Seitan is a complete protein and for those that miss or enjoy the meaty texture, this can be a good alternative.  It is made with wheat gluten so needs to be avoided if gluten intolerance is an issue.

If you have a display color setting in your laptop, set it to warmer tones of light, rather than energetic blue light. Doing so will most-likely aid your sleep problems.

Eliminate Long Naps

If you feel tired after a long day of work, try your best to resist the urge to take a quick nap. Understand that a quick nap can turn into a long, deep sleep. If you sleep during the day, your entire circadian rhythm could be disrupted resulting in insomnia, poor-quality sleep, less cognitive function, and many more undesirable results.

Foods that are hard to digest include cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower and broccoli, meat, cheeses and certain fruit.  Some of our most healthiest fruit and vegetables are best taken during the day so your body can digest without disrupting your sleep.  Some of these foods are high in amino acids which give you energy so definitely stick to these food types earlier in the day or evening.   Try and hydrate well during the day so that you don’t have to drink so much at night,  drinking water at bedtime will cause you to waken for a bathroom visit during the night.  Water is vital to our overall health and plays a major part in keeping our body working as it should so it is important to drink plenty of it – just not before bed.

Size Matters When Choosing Garden Containers

A few helpful points worth remembering is that it is easier to grow in large containers other than in smaller containers.  The reason being the large container contains more soil and will not dry out as quickly as a smaller pot.  You will need to water hanging baskets and small pots in the Summer twice a day to avoid them drying out.

Do home made masks work?

USA TODAY reported that according to Captain Michael Doyle, an army physician – the N95 mask is the safest mask for health care providers – let us hope that these precious front line workers are able to get these as soon as possible.

The CDC recommends that home made masks are used as a last resort for health care workers as the level of protection against Covid-19 is unknown.  In light of new evidence though the CDC do recommend the general public to wear cloth masks to help slow the virus down.  All former social distancing advice is of course paramount and mask wearing in no way changes this.

Cloth face coverings can be made from material found around the home and can be used as another voluntary public health measure but remember these alone will not protect you or those around you – it is vital to maintain social distancing and adhering to the governments guidelines.

Spring Clean!

De-clutter!  Yes, get all Marie Kondo, decluttering is good for the mind as well as your space.  Start with one room at a time, take a deep breath and get stuck in.  Books, clothes, ornaments, stationery, drawers, cd’s, videos even!

Organize your photographs!  All those boxes of photo’s from the days when we actually got our pictures printed and didn’t lose them on a laptop somewhere!  Try and put your photos into some sort of order, create space by getting rid of random pics that have no meaning – we all have them,  a sky or a hedge somewhere for some reason.

The Benefits of Crafting on Your Mental Health

In a study of more than 3500 knitters published in the British Journal of Occupational Therapy, 81% with depression reported feeling “happy” after knitting and over half reported feeling “very happy” after the activity.
